Bangladesh is observing a day of state mourning today (Saturday) in honor of Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent frontline figure of the last year's July-August mass uprising.
The official period of mourning was announced by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday night
In observance of the state mourning, the national flag has been hoisted at half-mast at all government and private establishments including missions overseas.
Additionally, special prayers were offered at mosques nationwide after Friday’s Jumma prayers while followers of other faiths also arranged prayers at their respective places of worship to honor the martyr’s memory.
Sharif Osman Hadi was the spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho and an aspiring independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the upcoming 13th National Parliament Election 2026.
Earlier, the remains of Osman Hadi arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Friday evening via a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight, amid tight security and widespread public mourning.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines Flight BG 585, carrying the body of Osman Hadi—who passed away while undergoing treatment in Singapore—landed at the Dhaka airport at 5:49 pm. The flight had departed from Singapore Changi International Airport at 4:03 pm (2:03 pm BST) en route to Dhaka.
On December 12, Hadi was shot while traveling in a battery-run auto-rickshaw on Box Culvert Road, under the jurisdiction of the Paltan Police Station. After a six-day battle for his life, he breathed his last on Thursday night while receiving treatment at a hospital in Singapore.
