Martyred Intellectuals Day and Birshrestha Jahangir's 54th Anniversary Observed

Martyred Intellectuals Day and the 54th martyrdom anniversary of Birshrestha Shaheed Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir, one of the seven highest gallantry award receivers of the 1971 Liberation War, were observed on Sunday with deep respect at Sonamasjid in Shibganj upazila, Chapainawabganj.

The upazila administration organized a morning tribute, which included laying wreaths at the graves of Birshrestha Shaheed Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir and Shaheed Major Nazmul Haque, both located next to the Choto Sonamasjid.

Officials from the upazila administration, freedom fighters, government and private sector representatives, political figures and local residents paid their solemn homage to the martyrs through wreath placements and moments of silence.

Deputy Commissioner Shahadat Hossain Masud, Superintendent of Police Gautam Kumar Biswas, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ashiq Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge of Shibganj Police Station Humayon Kabir and officials and employees of different departments of the Shibganj upazila administration were present there.

Special prayers were offered seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of Birshrestha Jahangir and all martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the great Liberation War of 1971.

On this day in 1971, just two days before the nation’s final victory against the Pakistani occupation army, Jahangir was killed in a battle with the enemy at Rehaichar in Chapainawabganj town.

Mohiuddin Jahangir was born on March 7, 1949, in Rahimganj village, Babuganj upazila, Barishal district. He began his military career on October 5, 1967, joining the Pakistan Military Academy as a cadet. Following successful completion of the 15th War Course, he was commissioned as an officer in the Engineering Corps. He was later posted to the 173 Engineer’s Battalion in Multan.

While stationed at Karakoram in West Pakistan, Jahangir took leave on June 10, 1971. He successfully crossed the Indian border and joined the Mukti Bahini at Mohdipur in Maldah district, West Bengal. By July 3, he was assigned as a Captain in Sector 7, tasked with commanding the operation at the Chapainawabganj border.

Leading 50 freedom fighters, Captain Jahangir crossed the Mohananda River near Akandabaria before dawn and established a camp at Baroghoria, west of Chapainawabganj town, on December 10, 1971.

On December 13, his team moved to a position near Rehaichar. The following day, December 14, Jahangir undertook a mission to destroy a light machine gun bunker manned by the Pakistani army. He crawled toward the position and successfully charged it with a grenade. However, he was simultaneously fired upon from another bunker, and the valiant freedom fighter was killed instantly on the spot.

His body was recovered by a group of freedom fighters from Rehaichar (now the southern part of the Birshreshtha Shaheed Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir Bridge) on the morning of December 15. He was then buried on the premises of the historic Sonamasjid in Shibganj upazila. He was posthumously awarded the title of Birshrestha, the highest gallantry award in Bangladesh.
