22 Projects Worth BDT 46,419.66 Crore Get ECNEC Approval

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, on Tuesday approved 22 development projects with a total estimated expenditure of BDT 46,419.66 crore in its meeting held at the NEC Conference Room in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

The session was attended by relevant advisers, members of the Planning Commission and concerned secretaries.

According to a press release from the Planning Ministry, the financing structure for these projects reveals that the majority of the funding will be sourced from the national exchequer, amounting to BDT 30,482.49 crore.

The remaining costs will be covered by BDT 14,247.56 crore from the respective implementing organizations' own funds and BDT 1,689.61 crore through project loans.

The approved package includes a mix of 14 entirely new initiatives, five revised projects, and three projects requiring extensions of their current tenures.

The Defence Ministry secured approval for two projects-revised infrastructure development of Mongla Commander Flotilla West and infrastructural development of the Army Institute of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in Savar.

One major project under the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry-the Modernisation and Expansion of Eastern Refinery Limited (ERL)-was also cleared by ECNEC.

Additionally, the Ministry of Housing and Public Works received the green light for the second revision of its project to construct 672 residential flats for government officials. This development features eight 15-story buildings located in Aliganj, Narayanganj.

The Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry secured approval for five separate initiatives. These include the establishment of the Dhaka WASA Training and Research Academy and the "Climate Resilient and Livelihood Enhancement Project (CRALEP)."

Other approved works involve a second revision of the waterlogging mitigation and infrastructure project in Sylhet City Corporation, the development of critical rural infrastructure in Patuakhali, and the widening and strengthening of essential upazila and union roads across the Sylhet division.

In the social sector, the ECNEC committee approved two significant initiatives: the reconstruction project for the Destitute Children Training and Rehabilitation Centre in Konabari, Gazipur, under the Social Welfare Ministry, and a project to enhance the education and research capacity of the National Institute of Advanced Nursing Education and Research (NIANER) under the Medical Education and Family Welfare Ministry.

Furthermore, the Education Ministry secured approval for two major university developments. These include the infrastructure development of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University and the third revision of the ongoing development project for the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP).

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved four key projects under the Water Resources Ministry, focusing on flood control, irrigation, and sustainable river management.

These initiatives include large-scale water management in the Rangamati Hill District, the rehabilitation of the historic Ganges-Kobadak irrigation system, and flood management efforts in the Surma-Kushiyara river basin.

In addition to the infrastructure and social sector initiatives, ECNEC approved a project for Sustainable Agricultural Development within the Bogura agricultural region under the Ministry of Agriculture. Furthermore, the committee greenlit the second phase of the Darul Arqam Islamic education management and consolidation project, overseen by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

The meeting also served as a forum to formally apprise the committee of 10 additional projects that had previously received approval from the Planning Adviser.
