Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman visited Dhaka University on Saturday morning to honor both the nation’s literary heritage and the sacrifices of the mass uprising in the last year's July-August.

Accompanied by senior party leaders, the BNP chief arrived at the DU campus at approximately 11:15 am under stringent security.

His first stop was the grave of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho, who passed away a week after being shot during the unrest on December 12.

At 11:30 am, Tarique Rahman placed a floral wreath at Osman Hadi’s grave, offered fateha and joined a munajat, seeking eternal peace for the soul of the July uprising activist.

Following this, the delegation moved to the Dhaka University Central Mosque to pay respects to National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. The BNP leader placed a wreath at the poet’s mazar and offered fateha in memory of the literary icon.

The visit to the university campus served as a prelude to a significant legal formality. From Dhaka University, Tarique Rahman traveled to the Election Commission (EC) office to complete his National Identity Card (NID) registration and officially enlist as a voter, clearing the way for his future participation in the electoral process.

Earlier, he paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar on Friday night.

Tarique Rahman reached the memorial around 10 pm, where he personally laid a wreath alongside senior party leaders.

His arrival was significantly delayed as thousands of supporters lined both sides of the road for miles to catch a glimpse of the leader, who waved to the crowds from his vehicle.

Earlier in the evening, due to official protocol preventing an altar-side tribute after sunset, senior BNP leaders—including Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan—had placed a wreath on his behalf at 5:06 pm.

Upon his own arrival later that night, Tarique Rahman signed the memorial’s visitors' book at 10:37 pm while remaining in his vehicle.

According to BNP Media Cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan, the Acting Chairman expressed his gratitude to the public and law enforcement personnel for their patience, noting that the massive turnout along the highway had slowed his motorcade.

The visit to Savar followed a poignant moment at Zia Udyan in the capital, where Tarique Rahman offered prayers at the grave of his father, BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman.

Standing at the graveside for the first time in nearly 19 years, the BNP leader was seen shedding tears during the munajat.

He was accompanied by a large delegation of party stalwarts including Amanullah Aman, Lutfozzaman Babar, Dhaka District BNP President Khandaker Abu Ashfaq and General Secretary Advocate Nipun Roy Chowdhury.
