Shipping and Labour and Employment Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain said on Sunday that the government is steadfast in its resolve to take strict legal action against those responsible for the recent attacks, vandalism and arson targeting the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star.
During a visit to the premises of both national dailies in Dhaka, he inspected the damaged infrastructure and held discussions with media personnel to assess the situation firsthand.
"We're committed to taking tougher legal action against those to be found involved in the attack of Prothom Alo and Daily Star offices," he said.
Emphasizing that diversity of opinion is a cornerstone of democracy, the Adviser condemned the violence as entirely unacceptable and deeply regrettable.
He reiterated that the government remains committed to ensuring full media independence without interference, describing the press as a vital pillar of the state essential for nation-building.
The Adviser confirmed that law enforcement agencies have already initiated steps to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.
While praising the resilience and professionalism of the staff at both organizations, he referenced the 2024 Mass Uprising as a pivotal moment in the nation's history.
Concluding his visit alongside senior editors Kamal Ahmed and Sajjad Sharif, Dr Sakhawat expressed solidarity with the affected journalists and assured them that the government would safeguard press freedom and help the media overcome this setback.
