
The nomination papers for Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman were officially submitted on Monday for the Dhaka-17 seat, marking his formal entry into the upcoming13th National Parliament Election 2026 and the Referendum onthe July National Charter, both scheduled for February 12.
A party delegation, led by BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council member Abdus Salam, submitted the nomination papers to the office of Dhaka Divisional Commissioner and Returning Officer Sharf Uddin Ahmed Choudhury at approximately 11:46 am.
Simultaneously, Tarique Rahman’s nomination for the Bogura-6 seat is being submitted by Bogura District BNP President Rezaul Karim Badsha.
In addition to the Acting Chairman’s candidacy, the party is filing nomination papers for BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia across three constituencies.
Her papers for Bogura-7 and Feni-1 are being submitted on the same day, following the successful filing of her nomination for Dinajpur-3 on Sunday.
It was learnt that the BNP Chairperson, who is currently undergoing treatment in the capital's Evercare Hospital, used her fingerprint instead of a signature on her nomination papers for the first time.
BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan confirmed that high-ranking party leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and members of the Standing Committee, are also completing their submissions today.
This flurry of political activity coincides with the final deadline for the submission of nomination papers, which expires this day at 5 pm.
The process follows a crucial administrative move by the Election Commission (EC) on Sunday, which officially added Tarique Rahman and his daughter Zaima Rahman, to the national voter list.
Tarique Rahman formally signed his nomination papers on Sunday evening, confirming his intent to contest from Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 under the party’s 'Sheaf of Paddy (Dhaner Shish)' symbol.
Following the day's submission deadline, candidates will have until January 20 to withdraw their names while official election campaigning is set to commence on January 22 and will conclude 48 hours before polling begins on February 10.
