In a historic move, the city of Hamtramck, Michigan, has renamed a section of Carpenter Street in honor of Begum Khaleda Zia, the three-time former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

The specific stretch of road, located between Joseph Campau Avenue and Conant Street, was officially renamed following a resolution passed by the Hamtramck City Council.

The initiative was spearheaded by the city’s four councilors of Bangladeshi origin, whose leadership was instrumental in securing this international recognition.

According to a statement from the BNP Media Cell, the Bangladeshi expatriate community views this gesture as a significant tribute to Bangladesh’s democratic struggle and political history.

Community members emphasized that the renaming is more than a symbolic gesture; it serves as a global testament to Begum Khaleda Zia’s enduring legacy.

This milestone follows a similar honor in Chicago, where a street was previously named after Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. By honoring Khaleda Zia in Michigan, another vital chapter of Bangladesh’s political heritage has been permanently memorialized on American soil.
