In a major push to ensure smoke-free public transport, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) have jointly provided specialized training to 1180 professional drivers this month.

The initiative aims to raise awareness about the severe health hazards of tobacco and ensure strict adherence to the Tobacco Control Act (amended in 2013).

The training program, titled "Professional Skill Development and Awareness Training for Professional Drivers," was conducted in seven phases at the BRTC Bus Depot in Zoar Sahara.

Drivers of buses, CNG-run auto-rickshaws, and other public vehicles participated in the sessions, which included audiovisual documentaries on the dangers of both direct and secondhand smoke.

According to a press release from DAM, the program specifically highlighted the risks faced by women and children, who are frequently exposed to passive smoking inside public vehicles.

Under the current law, smoking in public transport and hubs—such as terminals, railway stations, and government offices—is a punishable offense.

The training clarified these legal responsibilities to help drivers maintain a healthy environment for passengers.

This weekly training collaboration between BRTA and DAM’s Health Sector remains a cornerstone of the effort to eliminate tobacco use from the country's transportation network and protect public health.
