The Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Mumbai observed Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day on Saturday, with a solemn program honoring the heroes of the 1952 Language Movement.

The event featured a series of commemorative activities, including flag hoisting, wreath-laying, and cultural performances, to mark the global significance of the day.

The observance began at the chancery premises, where Deputy High Commissioner Farhana Ahmed Chowdhury hoisted the national flag at half-mast.

To the poignant strains of the iconic song "Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February," officials placed floral wreaths at a temporary Shaheed Minar. This was followed by a one-minute silence and special prayers (munajat) offered for the eternal peace of the martyrs' souls.

During the ceremony, official messages from the President, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister, and the State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out to the gathered audience.

In her keynote address, Deputy High Commissioner Farhana Ahmed Chowdhury emphasized that the Language Movement remains a defining chapter in Bangladesh's history.

She noted that the movement reflects a profound determination to protect national identity, culture, and dignity through supreme sacrifice—a legacy that gained global recognition when UNESCO declared the day as International Mother Language Day in 1999.

The event concluded with a vibrant cultural program featuring patriotic songs and poetry recitals in Bangla and various other languages, attended by invited guests, mission staff, and their families.
