The Election Commission (EC) is set to hold by-elections for the Bogura-6 and Sherpur-3 parliamentary constituencies on April 9, according to official sources.

The tentative date was discussed on Tuesday, with a formal schedule announcement expected shortly.

The move follows a statement by Election Commissioner Rahmanel Masud, who noted that the Commission aims to conclude the voting before April 14 to avoid the typical disruptions caused by the early rainy season and storms.

Commissioner Masud also confirmed that the postal ballot system will remain operational for eligible voters during these by-polls.

The Bogura-6 seat became vacant after BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, who won both the Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17 constituencies in the February 12 general elections, opted to retain his Dhaka-17 seat and resigned from the former.

Meanwhile, the election for Sherpur-3 was previously cancelled on February 4 following the death of Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Nuruzzaman Badal.

Following the February 12 national polls, 296 newly elected members of parliament took their oaths of office on Tuesday.

The current parliamentary composition features a dominant 208 members from the BNP, alongside 68 from Jamaat-e-Islami, seven independents, and various representatives from smaller parties including the NCP, Ganaodhikar Parishad and Islami Andolan Bangladesh. Results for the Chattogram-2 and 4 constituencies remain withheld pending court decisions.
