The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday verified and approved the presidential nomination papers of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alongside Dr. Oli Ahmed, Bir Bikram, representing the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party coalition.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin confirmed the validity of both candidates' filings following formal scrutiny at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital. The examination of documents commenced at 11 am on Sunday.

The CEC initially cleared the paperwork for Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed, Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), who is contesting on behalf of the 11-party alliance.

Subsequently, he notified a visiting BNP delegation headed by party standing committee member Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan that Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s nomination had likewise been accepted as valid.

Both political camps had submitted their filings on August 13, the closing date for nominations.

On that Thursday, the BNP handed over Mirza Fakhrul's papers to the CEC at the Election Commission headquarters while the 11-party coalition submitted theirs endorsing Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed.

Outlining the remaining schedule, EC Secretariat Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed stated that candidates have until 4 pm on Tuesday to withdraw their nomination.

He further noted that balloting for the presidential election will occur on Thursday inside the session hall of Jatiya Sangsad, with voting scheduled between 2 pm and 5 pm.
