Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood today (Saturday) said that there is no fuel shortage in the country and urged citizens not to panic-buy petroleum products, as the government maintains adequate fuel reserves, ensuring an uninterrupted supply.

"There is no reason for people to worry about fuel oil," the minister said during a media briefing outside the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in the city.

He had just emerged from a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, where they discussed the global energy situation, particularly the growing concerns surrounding fuel supplies due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

About the current rationing system at fuel stations, Iqbal Hassan explained that the measure was introduced to manage uncertainty over the duration of the conflict. However, he said that the rationing has caused some citizens to stockpile fuel which has led to unnecessary panic.

"In reality, there is no shortage of fuel oil," he reassured, adding that two additional fuel shipments are scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on March 9.

"We have sufficient reserves and are supplying fuel to petrol stations, which will continue. There is no need for people to queue up overnight."

The minister also addressed reports of some petrol stations running out of fuel during the day. He explained that the government allocates a fixed amount of fuel to each station.

Therefore, stations may temporarily run out of stock if they sell their entire allocation quickly, but restocking will occur with the next supply, he added.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and will deploy mobile courts starting tomorrow to prevent irregularities and ensure smooth distribution," he said, confirming that necessary steps are being taken to minimize disruptions.

In response to questions about the duration of the rationing system, the minister explained that it would depend on the length of the ongoing conflict.

He said that the government must manage resources prudently while the situation persists.

Iqbal Hassan also highlighted that the government is exploring alternative energy sources beyond Qatar and is working to secure additional fuel supplies from other countries if needed.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit, Energy and Mineral Resources Division Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam and Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman were present during the briefing.
