The government has directed all primary, secondary and higher education institutions across the country to keep their playgrounds open for local children after school hours and on holidays.

The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) issued the formal order on Monday, following a directive from the Ministry of Education.

The new policy mandates that school and college grounds be protected and utilized effectively to provide boys and girls with ample opportunities for sports and recreation.

The decision was finalized during the first meeting of the ‘Inter-Ministerial Committee,’ which was established to identify and optimize the use of sports grounds at both city and village levels.

According to the ministry’s letter, the heads of all government and private colleges, as well as secondary schools, are now required to ensure that these facilities remain accessible to the local community once regular academic activities conclude and during weekly or public holidays.

The DSHE has circulated the order to directors, deputy directors, district education officers, and upazila and thana-level education officers nationwide to ensure immediate and strict implementation.

Officials emphasized that protecting existing playgrounds and ensuring their proper use is essential for the physical and mental well-being of the youth.
