The Election Commission (EC) officially announced on Monday that the elections for the 50 reserved women’s seats in the 13th Parliament are scheduled to take place on May 12.

Following a media briefing at Nirbachan Bhaban chaired by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed that the formal election schedule—including deadlines for nomination submission, scrutiny, and withdrawal—will be released on April 8.

This announcement follows the constitutional requirement to fill these seats within 90 days of the general election gazette, which was published on February 13.

Under current legislative frameworks, reserved women’s seats are allocated to political parties and alliances in direct proportion to the number of general seats they secured in the national polls.

Based on the results of the 13th parliamentary election, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leads the treasury bench with 209 seats, supported by allies Gono Odhikar Parishad, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), and Ganosamhati Andolon, who each hold one seat.

The opposition is primarily represented by Jamaat-e-Islami with 68 seats, alongside its allies the NCP with six, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish with two, and Khelafat Majlish with one.

The remaining landscape includes one seat for Islami Andolan Bangladesh and seven independent lawmakers.

Preliminary calculations by the Commission suggest a distribution of 36 reserved seats for the BNP-led alliance, 13 for the Jamaat-led opposition bloc, and one seat for the independent candidates' alliance.

The EC has already dispatched formal correspondence to the relevant parties and alliances to finalize these numbers before the schedule is gazetted.

In addition to the reserved seat timeline, the Commission noted that polling for the Sherpur-3 and Bogura-6 constituencies, which were previously pending, is set to proceed on April 9.

This final phase of seat allocation will complete the full 350-member composition of the current parliament.
