EU and Bangladesh Fast-Track Renewable Energy as Strategic Security Priority

The European Union and Bangladesh are intensifying their strategic partnership to prioritize renewable energy deployment as a critical component of national energy security.

During a high-level summit in Dhaka titled “Boosting Renewable Energy in Bangladesh – From Design to Implementation,” EU Ambassador Michael Miller identified energy security as a defining challenge and reaffirmed a shared commitment to making the sector more attractive for international investment.

A central feature of this collaboration is the Bangladesh Renewable Energy Facility (BREF), a flagship initiative under the EU’s Global Gateway.

This facility is designed to catalyze large-scale solar and wind power projects, aiming to deliver up to 750 MWp of new capacity while improving grid resilience through innovation in battery storage and dual-use land technology.

Bangladesh Reaffirms Commitment to Peace and Democracy at Dakar Forum

The initiative represents a total projected investment of approximately Euro 700 million.

The financial framework for the public sector involves a Euro 350 million sovereign loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB), bolstered by a Euro 45 million EU grant intended to de-risk projects and ensure they are commercially viable.

Germany is further supporting the facility with a Euro 50 million contribution and additional technical assistance grants.

Senior officials from the Power Division and international partners emphasized that this joint effort is essential for mobilizing the technical expertise and massive capital required for a green transition.

The BREF-TA (Technical Assistance) component was specifically highlighted as a vital tool for ensuring that projects meet rigorous environmental, social, and technical standards to reach "bankability."

The event, hosted by the EIB in partnership with the Ministry of Power, Energy & Mineral Resources, brought together government representatives, regulators, and private sector stakeholders.

Discussions focused on harnessing wind and solar resources to meet Bangladesh’s climate targets, with participants from Germany and the EIB encouraging bold movement toward a low-carbon, resilient energy future for the country.
