Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury informed Parliament on Tuesday that Bangladesh’s total foreign debt reached approximately USD 78 billion as of February 2026.
Responding to a starred question from independent lawmaker Rumeen Farhana, the Minister stated, “According to the account up to February, 2026, the foreign debt of the Bangladesh government amounts to USD 78,067.20 million.”
The parliamentary session, presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, commenced at 3 pm.
The Finance Minister explained that the Economic Relations Division (ERD) is responsible for repaying foreign loans on behalf of the government.
He noted that for each fiscal year, a projection is prepared to estimate the total expenditure required for servicing foreign debt, encompassing both principal and interest, with the necessary allocations maintained within the national budget.
Amir Khosru added that loan repayments are consistently made from these budgetary allocations throughout the year according to a pre-scheduled plan.
In response to a scripted question from treasury bench member Md Shamsur Rahman Simul Biswas, the Minister detailed the long-term borrowing trends.
He revealed that the government received a total of USD 85,992.64 million—nearly USD 86 billion—in foreign loans between the 2008–09 fiscal year and the 2025–26 fiscal year.
During this same timeframe, the government repaid USD 22,328.47 million in principal and USD 8,696.82 million in interest.
Providing further context on recent debt levels, Chowdhury mentioned that as of December 30, 2025, the foreign debt stood at USD 77,279.12 million.
He further informed the House that from the 2007–08 fiscal year up to February of the 2025–26 fiscal year, the government borrowed a total of USD 87,396.03 million while repaying USD 22,050.79 million in principal.
“As a result, the country’s foreign debt amount increased by USD 65,346.24 million during this period,” the Minister concluded.
