Full-scale import and export activities through the Benapole-Petrapole Land Port resumed on Thursday morning, ending a three-day suspension triggered by the West Bengal state assembly elections in India.
Commercial operations at the country's largest land port had been halted from 6 pm on Sunday until Thursday afternoon.
The suspension was implemented following security concerns and directives from Indian authorities regarding the election period.
Despite the trade standstill, limited cross-border movement was maintained for passport-holding passengers in special cases, emergency medical services, and the transport of highly perishable goods.
Benapole C&F Staff Association General Secretary Sajedur Rahman noted that the temporary shutdown was a direct response to the election situation across the border.
Confirming the restoration of trade, Benapole Port Director Md. Shamim Hossain stated that Indian trucks carrying goods began entering the port on Thursday morning, with export activities also proceeding at a normal pace.
Furthermore, Benapole Customs Assistant Commissioner Rahat Hossain clarified that internal customs operations remained functional throughout the closure period.
He added that special measures were successfully taken to ensure the unloading of perishable items.
With the resumption of full operations, normalcy has returned to the port area, restoring the vital flow of trade between Bangladesh and India through this strategic land route.
