The historic May Day is being observed today (on Friday) across Bangladesh and the globe with due solemnity, commemorating the historic struggle and supreme sacrifices of workers to establish their legal rights.

This year, the day is being celebrated under the theme "Healthy Workers, Productive Hands, A New Dawn Awaits (Sustho Sramik, Karmotho Hat, Ashbe Ebar Nobo Provat)."

The day’s legacy dates back to 1890, honoring the laborers who sacrificed their lives following the 1886 Haymarket Riot in Chicago while demanding an eight-hour workday.

These tragic events, marked by bomb attacks and police atrocities, eventually led to a global revolution in labor rights, reducing daily working hours and securing international recognition for the working class.

While class discrimination persists in various forms, the spirit of May Day has largely liberated the oppressed from the chains of subjugation and added a significant chapter of social change to world history.

Marking the occasion, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages extending warm greetings to the laboring community.

President Shahabuddin noted that observing the day with such dignity is encouraging and emphasized how the Chicago workers' sacrifice continues to inspire the global working class.

He further recalled the welfare initiatives pioneered by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and highlighted the current government’s commitment to labor law reforms, fair wages, social protection, pension systems, and the safeguarding of trade union rights.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, in his message, reaffirmed that the "working people are the main driving force behind the development, prosperity and progress of any country."

He underscored that industry, agriculture, infrastructure, and a strong economy are built through the tireless efforts of workers.

The Premier emphasized that the foremost priorities of the present democratic government remain the improvement of living standards, ensuring fair rights, creating safe working conditions, and upholding the social dignity of the workforce.

May Day remains a national holiday in approximately 80 countries, including Bangladesh, and is celebrated privately in many others.

To highlight the far-reaching significance of the day on employer-worker relations, various media outlets are publishing special articles and broadcasting programs dedicated to the rights and achievements of the working class.
