Commerce Minister Urges Full Use of Bangladesh-US Trade Pact for Mutual Gain

Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir has called for the effective utilization of the trade agreement between Bangladesh and the United States, asserting that the deal is designed for mutual benefit and should not be a cause for concern.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday following a high-level meeting with Brendan Lynch, Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, the Minister emphasized a "win-win" approach to international diplomacy.

Addressing recent public discourse regarding the agreement, Muktadir clarified that the current administration did not initiate the pact but is upholding it as part of state continuity.

"An agreement between states is not like a personal contract that can be cancelled at will," he remarked. "It is a reality, and we aim to utilize it to its fullest potential to expand trade and investment."

The Minister also addressed a recent investigation initiated by the US, noting that Bangladesh has sought clarification and formally conveyed its position.

He expressed that it would have been "more positive" if such investigations were avoided within the existing framework.

Muktadir firmly dismissed allegations of "overcapacity" or "dumping," stating that such claims are baseless.

He highlighted that the ready-made garments sector operates under "strict international compliance standards," ensuring no violations of labor laws or use of child labor.

On the subject of potential revisions, the Minister assured that the government, as representatives of the people, always prioritizes national interest.

He described the agreement as having a "self-correcting element," explaining that "if any provision of the agreement contradicts Bangladesh's interest, there is scope within the agreement itself to amend it."

The meeting, which included Commerce Secretary (Routine charge) Md Abdur Rahim Khan, focused on various issues of mutual interest aimed at strengthening the trade and investment relationship between the two nations.
