Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday launched the re-excavation works of the "Bishwa Canal" in Chandpur, marking another step in the government's nationwide river and canal restoration initiative aimed at preserving the environment and boosting climate resilience.

The Premier officially inaugurated the project at around 4:30 pm by cutting soil with a spade adjacent to Ghosher Hat in Kumarduli village, located under the Shah Mahmudpur Union of Chandpur Sadar Upazila.

Following the excavation ceremony, he planted a Neem sapling along the bank of the canal.

Running from the Dakatia River to the southern border of Matlab Upazila via Ghosher Hat, the Bishwa Canal project highlights the administration's long-term strategy to conserve local water bodies, maintain natural water flows, and combat the adverse impacts of climate change.

This marked the Prime Minister's second major environmental infrastructure launch of the day. Earlier, at around 2:40 pm, he inaugurated the re-excavation work of the Khordda Canal in the Waruk Bazar area of Tamta Dakshin Union in Shahrasti Upazila and addressed a massive public rally.
