Bangladesh has been unanimously elected as a Vice-President of the 114th International Labour Conference (ILC).

This election highlights growing international trust in the country's contributions to global labour governance, human rights, and multilateral cooperation.

According to a message received on Tuesday from the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN Office in Geneva, the country's election was strongly endorsed by delegates from all 187 member states of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN Office in Geneva Nahida Sobhan officially assumed the high-profile role of Vice-President.

She will serve alongside the newly elected President of the Conference, Juan Castillo—who is Uruguay's Minister of Labour and Social Security—and fellow Vice-Presidents Kristen Kaufman of the United States and Gerardo Martínez of Argentina.

The global community views this unanimous election as a direct recognition of Bangladesh’s ongoing commitment to promoting decent work environments, advancing social justice initiatives, safeguarding labour rights, and fostering multilateral cooperation to tackle emerging challenges in the global workforce.

In this leadership role, Bangladesh will actively help steer the daily proceedings of the conference.

The nation will also play a key role in facilitating consensus-building among governments, employers, and workers' representatives regarding critical global labour and employment policies.

Commonly referred to as the "world parliament of labour," the International Labour Conference serves as the highest decision-making body of the ILO.

It acts as the premier global platform for debating policies that shape the future of work and social justice.

This year's session has drawn nearly 5,000 delegates to Geneva, cementing its status as the largest global gathering exclusively dedicated to labour and employment rights.
