Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday chaired a high-level meeting at the Cabinet Division conference room in the Bangladesh Secretariat to review two major waste-to-energy initiatives planned for the capital's Aminbazar and Matuail sites.

Briefing the media following the session, Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Hossain Shadhin stated that China's CMEC Group is set to invest in a facility at Aminbazar under the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

This plant will process roughly 3,000 tonnes of municipal waste daily to produce 42.5 megawatts of electricity, with operations slated to feed power into the national grid by August 2028 and sustain generation for the subsequent 25 years.

Concurrently, South Korea's B&F Company will spearhead a comprehensive waste management and power production venture at Matuail under the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

Shadhin detailed that this facility will process 3,000 to 3,500 tonnes of waste daily while yielding approximately 15,000 tonnes of methane gas annually.

This output will translate to roughly 81,000 megawatt-hours of electricity per year, averaging about 221 megawatt-hours daily.

Furthermore, the Matuail initiative will incorporate the production of solar energy, organic fertilizer, animal feed, and sustainable eco-bricks, contributing substantially to urban waste management, climate change mitigation, and global warming reduction.

To fast-track progress, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman instructed officials to convene an immediate inter-ministerial dialogue encompassing the Ministries of Local Government, Power and Environment.

Stressing strict adherence to schedules and the deployment of premier green technologies, the premier underscored the imperative of completing both ventures within their designated timeframes.

The meeting drew high-ranking officials including LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan, DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam, Prime Minister's Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar, and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman.
