PM Stresses Merit and Discipline over Political Bias in Army Promotions

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasized the necessity of prioritizing merit and professional excellence over personal bias or political influence during military promotions, underscoring that such standards are essential for establishing a modern, highly disciplined, and professional Bangladesh Army.

“In order to build a modern and professional army, the highest importance should be given to merit, professional competence, integrity, moral character, leadership qualities and discipline in promotions, rising above personal liking and disliking or political considerations,” the Prime Minister stated.

According to Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony, the premier made these observations while delivering his inaugural address as chief guest at the opening ceremony of the Army Headquarters Selection Board 2026, held at Dhaka Cantonment on Sunday morning.

During his speech, Tarique Rahman paid solemn tribute to the proclaimer of independence, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, honoring his foundational efforts in reorganizing and modernizing the nation's armed forces. 

He further expressed profound gratitude to the heroic martyrs of the 1971 War of Liberation, war-injured freedom fighters, and serving and former personnel of the armed forces for their selfless sacrifices.

The Prime Minister also offered deep respects to army personnel who lost their lives while serving on active duty in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Commending the armed forces for safeguarding national sovereignty, the Prime Minister noted that in addition to territorial defense, the Bangladesh Army plays a critical role in preserving domestic law and order, managing natural disasters and aiding civil authorities whenever required.

He conveyed his appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff and all members of the force for their dedication and service to the nation.

Earlier upon his arrival at the Army Headquarters, the Prime Minister was received by the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of General Staff. The Army Chief formally expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for gracing the occasion and inaugurating the selection board.

The inaugural session was attended by senior military leaders, including the Prime Minister's Defence Adviser, Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. AKM Shamsul Islam. 

Following the formal proceedings, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman joined military officers for an official group photograph and recorded his remarks in the Army Visitor's Book.
