United States President Donald Trump's Special Envoy on South and Central Asian Affairs, Ambassador Sergio Gor, commenced his inaugural official visit to Bangladesh on Thursday, a mission intended to reinforce bilateral strategic connections and expand mutual cooperation across regional security and economic domains.

Extending a warm welcome to the visiting diplomat, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen characterized Gor as a friend of the nation, emphasizing that his presence underscores the deepening relationship between Washington and Dhaka.

"I am delighted to welcome to Bangladesh my friend, the US Special Envoy to South and Central Asia, Ambassador Sergio Gor," Ambassador Christensen stated, adding that the engagement would fortify Bangladesh-US strategic ties alongside joint security and economic efforts across the region.

Outlining the scope of the trip prior to Gor's arrival, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman described the mission on Wednesday as an exploratory assessment designed to afford the US administration a comprehensive understanding of Bangladesh's current landscape.

"He will want to understand Bangladesh. He will speak not only with us but also with many other stakeholders," Foreign Minister Rahman remarked to journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Dr. Khalilur further indicated that the special envoy's itinerary includes a scheduled visit to the Rohingya refugee camps, highlighting that the United States continues to serve as the leading international donor supporting relief operations for the displaced population from Myanmar.

The Foreign Minister underscored that ties between Bangladesh and the United States remain multifaceted, noting that both nations share a mutual commitment to advancing their bilateral partnership to higher levels.
