Prime Minister Tarique Rahman appealed for expanded American investment and deeper economic ties during high-level talks on Saturday with visiting US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor, spanning bilateral relations, trade expansion, the Rohingya humanitarian crisis, and emerging technology partnerships.

The bilateral meeting commenced at 9:30 am at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in Tejgaon and took place in a warm and cordial atmosphere, according to PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Shadhin and PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony.

Commending the Prime Minister's leadership, US Special Envoy Sergio Gor noted that stability is returning to Bangladesh under his administration.

As a tangible demonstration of this progress, Gor shared that the United States has upgraded its travel advisory for Bangladesh, signaling to American entrepreneurs and corporate entities that the country is fully open for business and foreign direct investment.

In a bid to strengthen supply chain resilience, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman urged the United States to step up capital investment across Bangladesh, highlighting key opportunities in warehousing, soybean, cotton, wheat, and agricultural processing sectors to build a robust and globally competitive market ecosystem.

Responding to the Prime Minister's call, Gor confirmed that Washington will proactively work toward expanding investment cooperation through the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).

He further disclosed that American investors operating in Dhaka are keen to organize an upcoming US Investor Summit in Bangladesh, an initiative he is personally facilitating.

The discussions also yielded significant progress on regulatory and technological fronts.

The two leadership teams discussed an upcoming delegation visit by the US-Bangladesh Business Council scheduled for next month.

Moreover, Gor assured the Prime Minister of his backing to resume US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspection operations in Bangladesh.

Highlighting Bangladesh's ambition to draw foreign capital into its growing digital economy, the Prime Minister emphasized the country's strategic focus on information technology.

Observing Bangladesh's high potential in the IT domain, Gor indicated that the country could join the US-led Pax Silica initiative—a global economic framework for secure tech supply chains and artificial intelligence—promising to take concrete administrative steps to facilitate this partnership.

The ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis formed another cornerstone of the dialogue.

Drawing on his field visit to the refugee camps in Cox's Bazar on Friday, the US envoy commended the government and people of Bangladesh for their continued generosity, host duty, and unwavering humanitarian relief efforts provided to displaced Myanmar nationals.

The high-level session was attended by a broad delegation, including Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman, State Minister Shama Obaed Islam, Prime Minister's Adviser on Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir and PM's Advisers Rehan Asif Asad and Mahadi Amin, along with senior diplomatic representatives from both nations.
