As part of a strategic national effort to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined by the United Nations, three rural communities in Bangladesh have been selected to be developed into model "SDG Villages."

The designated locations include Pankhali village in the Dakop Upazila of Khulna, Mitinga Chhari in the Kaptai Upazila of Rangamati, and Nafanagar in the Bochaganj Upazila of Dinajpur.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to officially inaugurate this transformative initiative on Monday, August 10. During the ceremony, the Prime Minister will be physically present in Pankhali, while simultaneously connecting virtually with representatives and residents from Mitinga Chhari and Nafanagar.

According to Dakop Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Borhan Uddin Mithu, the core mandate of this project is to prioritize localized solutions for pressing regional challenges.

The comprehensive development plan focuses on poverty alleviation, the mitigation of climate-related risks and the resolution of long-standing waterlogging issues.

Furthermore, the initiative seeks to elevate standards in public healthcare and quality education.

Additional critical objectives under the SDG framework include the reduction of maternal and infant mortality rates, the expansion of safe water and sanitation infrastructure and the promotion of women’s empowerment.

The government also aims to foster agricultural growth, encourage the adoption of renewable energy, support environmental conservation and afforestation efforts, and bridge the digital divide by extending modern technological services to these areas.

The announcement has sparked significant optimism among the inhabitants of Pankhali, who have expressed that this development aligns with their long-held aspirations for the village.

Residents anticipate that the status will catalyze essential improvements, including more reliable electricity access, a surge in local business activity, enhanced agricultural yields, expanded employment prospects, and superior delivery of basic public services.

In preparation for the launch, Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Abdullah Harun conducted an on-site visit to Pankhali on August 6 to engage directly with the local community.

He has directed relevant officials to ensure the seamless delivery of necessary services and to offer full cooperation toward the village’s rapid development.

Welcoming the government’s commitment, Pankhali Union Parishad Chairman Sheikh Sabbir Ahmed noted that the declaration is a vital step toward uplifting the socio-economic status of the coastal region and will serve as a engine for new job creation.
