Four additional parliamentary panels were formally established on Thursday, finalizing the constitution of all 50 legislative committees belonging to the current 13th Parliament.
The newly formed committees encompass oversight for the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of Public Administration, and Public Undertakings.
Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni formally presented the motions proposing the creation of the four panels alongside the restructuring of several pre-existing bodies, which the chamber subsequently ratified through a voice vote.
Leadership across all four newly minted panels has been assigned exclusively to lawmakers representing the BNP.
Md Ashraf Uddin, representing Narsingdi-5, was designated as the chairperson for the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Defence, whereas Miah Nuruddin Ahmad Apu from Shariatpur-3 took on the chair of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
Additionally, Sayeed Ahmed representing Shariatpur-1 assumed leadership of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Public Administration, while Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni of Barguna-2 was appointed to head the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Undertakings.
Concurrently, a number of existing parliamentary committees underwent structural reconstitution while retaining their incumbent chairpersons.
The panels subjected to reorganization comprise those dedicated to Private Members’ Bills and Resolutions, the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Jatiya Sangsad maintains a total of 50 legislative committees, which include 39 standing committees dedicated to specific ministries alongside 11 subject-oriented panels.
With the sole exception of the Public Accounts Committee—which is presided over by Syed Abdullah Mohammed Taher—every parliamentary committee is chaired by members belonging to the ruling political party.
