
A Bangladeshi trader originating from Chandpur district was fatally shot by armed attackers while residing in South Africa.
The victim was identified as 40-year-old Md Jamal Mia, whose father is Md Sidu Mia Bepari from Sipaikandi village located within Fatehpur East union under Matlab Uttar upazila.
Family members reported that the tragic occurrence took place around 11:30 pm on Wednesday.
Jamal relocated to South Africa approximately four to five years previously to pursue improved financial prospects, subsequently establishing a general merchandise store which he operated alongside a hired employee, though the precise geographical coordinates of the establishment remain unverified.
According to his relatives, an armed gang forcefully entered the retail shop on Wednesday evening and discharged firearms, causing Jamal's instantaneous death on the premises.
The accompanying shop worker sustained critical injuries during the assault and is currently receiving medical care at a regional clinic.
The underlying objective prompting the violent attack has not yet been determined.
The victim's 70-year-old father, Sidu Mia Bepari, appealed to official channels to facilitate the prompt repatriation of his son's mortal remains to Bangladesh so that funeral rites can be conducted in their native village.
He further requested active assistance from the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, the Prime Minister, and the area Member of Parliament to secure the return of the body.
Sidu additionally demanded accountability and justice for the homicide of his son alongside financial reparations from the government of South Africa.
Khokon Mia, a local Union Parishad representative, stated that he formally briefed the Matlab Uttar Upazila Nirbahi Officer regarding the fatality.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahmuda Kulsum Moni confirmed to a local media that she was notified of the murder by the council member and has already initiated communication with the Bangladesh Embassy stationed in South Africa.
"Once the necessary documents of the deceased, Jamal Mia, reach the embassy, it will take the necessary measures," she remarked, while guaranteeing that all required administrative support from domestic authorities will be extended.
