Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram said on Monday that Bangladesh anticipates a neighborly partnership with India grounded in mutual respect, emphasizing that the nation desires amicable ties with all international partners, including its South Asian neighbor.
"We need to maintain good relations with India. But it does not appear that India wants good relations," he remarked, pointing out that India's decision to shelter ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and permit her political activities from abroad remains wholly undesirable.
The Speaker articulated these observations while engaging with media representatives following an interactive session alongside the deputy commissioner, the superintendent of police, and additional civil administration officials at the Bhola Circuit House.
He went on to recall that the authoritarian Hasina regime was toppled through a popular mass uprising, after which a caretaker administration steered the state for nearly two consecutive years.
In February of the current year, he noted, the citizenry entrusted the BNP with the mandate to form a government via a transparent electoral process, leaving the incumbent administration with a tenure of merely seven months.
He asserted that every institutional domain suffered catastrophic collapse owing to the misgovernance perpetrated by the Awami League administration across a 17-year span, during which the regime established notorious precedents for homicides, staged killings, enforced disappearances, capital flight, and systemic corruption, driving the state toward complete ruin.
The Speaker observed that overcoming such extensive devastation requires considerable duration, noting that although a mere seven months have elapsed since the new administration assumed office—a relatively brief window—development initiatives have already commenced.
Reflecting upon the nation's developmental trajectory, he stated that mutual consensus between the governing party and the opposition will deliver Bangladesh from 17 years of prolonged deprivation and ensure the success of its progress.
Alluding to the historic July uprising, he affirmed that both the administration and the opposition share an unwavering commitment to executing the July Charter, assuring that tangible results will emerge once the ongoing constitutional overhaul reaches completion.
The Speaker additionally observed that the populace has successfully reclaimed freedom of expression, noting that during the Awami League tenure, uttering truths was perilous, as countless individuals forfeited their lives under the guise of crossfire or fell victim to enforced disappearances.
Bhola Deputy Commissioner Dr. Shamim Rahman, Superintendent of Police Shahidullah Kawsar, District BNP Convener and District Council Administrator Golam Nabi Alamgir, alongside District BNP Member Secretary Raisul Alam, among various dignitaries, participated in the proceedings.
Concluding a three-day official tour of Bhola, the Speaker departed for Dhaka via Barisal earlier on the same day.
