State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit Saturday formally launched commercial gas production from the newly drilled Titas-28 well, projected to inject 12 to 13 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) into the national grid to alleviate domestic energy shortages and bolster industrial and power operations.

Special guests included Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Commerce Chairman Engineer Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamal (MP) and Energy and Mineral Resources Division Secretary Md. Ziaul Hoque, alongside senior representatives from the ministry, Petrobangla, and Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL).

Executed by Chinese contractor CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company Ltd. (CCDC) under an April 10, 2025 accord within the four evaluation-cum-development wells project across Titas and Kamta fields, drilling spanned December 15, 2025, to June 19, 2026.

Reaching a measured depth of 3,601 metres and a true vertical depth of 3,471 metres at an approximate total expenditure of BDT 200 crore inclusive of VAT and income tax, the site underwent subsequent drill stem testing (DST) and production checks before leadership inspected ongoing deep exploratory drilling at Titas-31 and Titas-29 wells.

BGFCL currently administers six fields—Titas, Habiganj, Bakhrabad, Narsingdi, Meghna, and Kamta—supplying roughly 30 percent of domestic output and 18 percent of total national supply.

Targeting 150 total exploratory wells, BGFCL's active rollout features five ongoing initiatives adding 106.5 MMCFD via six new wells and eight workovers by 2030, plus a subsequent pipeline of nine new wells and 12 workovers yielding 126 MMCFD, aligning with a master blueprint targeting cumulative additions of nearly 235 MMCFD from 19 wells by 2035.

Prospect mapping spans 3D seismic coverage over 1,450 square kilometres across Habiganj, Bakhrabad, Narsingdi, and Meghna fields, alongside 2D/3D surveys covering 632 square kilometres northwest of Titas and northeast of Narsingdi.
