State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam, currently visiting the United States, has invited tech giant Meta to open an office in Bangladesh.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared this information in a press release on Wednesday.

According to the release, the invitation was extended during a meeting between the State Minister and Joel Kaplan, Meta's Chief Global Affairs Officer, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, local time.

The meeting included discussions on how Meta's various platforms and technologies can support businesses, entrepreneurs, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and the country's e-commerce sector, the statement noted.

Shama Obaid also called on Meta to take further steps to prevent online harassment and digital abuse.

Additionally, she discussed Bangladesh's proposed cyber security law with Joel Kaplan during the meeting.

The meeting was attended by Prime Adviser Rehan Asif, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN Irene Khan, and Deputy Permanent Representative AKM Wahiduzzaman.
