Bangladesh’s political stability has improved and violence has declined following the events of July 2024 and the formation of a new government after the 2026 general election, according to a report by the UK Home Office.
The findings were detailed in a report titled Report of a Fact-Finding Mission Bangladesh: Political Situation, October 2026.
The Country Policy and Information Team (CPIT) conducted the fact-finding mission in Bangladesh from June 7 to June 15, 2026.
Data was gathered through interviews with government officials, Bangladesh Police members, political parties, civil society representatives, human rights organizations, journalists, and researchers.
According to the executive summary, the overall political situation in Bangladesh has stabilized and improved since July 2024. The situation saw further progress with the establishment of the new government after the 2026 general election.
Various sources cited in the report described the 2026 general election as generally peaceful, noting a significant reduction in violence compared to previous polls.
The report highlights a post-election decline in political violence. Political parties, journalists, civil society groups, and human rights organizations are currently operating with greater freedom than under the previous Awami League government, benefitting from expanded space to express views and participate in public debate.
Multiple sources indicated an increase in opportunities to engage in political activities compared to earlier periods.
Bangladesh Police officials told the mission that law enforcement authorities have generally maintained law and order. They also highlighted measures taken to secure major religious festivals.
The report notes that post-election political violence has decreased. Instances of violence that do occur are typically localized, often stemming from local turf wars, business interests, property disputes, and local political control.
Sources cited in the report stated that a majority of individuals arrested in politically motivated cases under the previous government have been released, and most such charges have been dropped.
According to police data, over 21,000 cases deemed politically motivated or false have been withdrawn, while the review of older cases remains ongoing.
The report also evaluates the functioning, accountability, and reform process of law enforcement agencies.
Sources quoted in the document emphasized that ordinary citizens currently enjoy greater freedom to express opinions, participate in political activities, and join public discussions than in the pre-2024 period.
Overall, the UK Home Office report outlines a trajectory of enhanced political stability in Bangladesh following the events of July 2024 and the 2026 general election.
It underscores key developments including reduced post-election violence, expanded freedom of expression and political engagement, sustained law enforcement efforts, and the ongoing review and withdrawal of politically motivated cases.
