A court has granted a fresh remand for six individuals, including Salman F Rahman, former advisor to ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in connection with the killing of auto-rickshaw driver Hafizul Shikdar during an anti-discrimination movement in Dhaka's Badda area.
On Monday (February 3) at 10:00 am, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq issued the remand order.
The other accused in the case include former Justice Abul Hossain Mohammad Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, former Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam, former Law Minister Anisul Huq, former Social Welfare Minister Dr Dipu Moni, and labour leader Golam Sarwar Pintu.
Earlier in the morning, around 9:15 am, police transported the accused from Keraniganj prison to the court. CID Dhaka Metro North Inspector Ridwanul Haque, the case's investigating officer, applied for a five-day remand. The defense lawyers sought bail and urged the court to dismiss the remand request. However, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi argued in favor of it. After reviewing the arguments, the judge granted a two-day remand.
According to case records, on July 20, during the anti-discrimination movement in Badda’s Pragati Sarani area, 29-year-old auto-rickshaw driver Hafizul Shikdar was waiting for passengers when he was allegedly shot and killed by the accused while they were attempting to suppress the protest. A case was subsequently filed at Badda Police Station on August 21 regarding the incident.
