Law Amendment Approved: ICT Can Punish Political Parties

An amendment to the International Crimes Tribunal Act has been approved at a special meeting of the interim government's Advisory Council. It is known that through this amendment, the International Crimes Tribunal will be able to punish any political party, its affiliated organizations, or support groups.

This approval was given on Saturday night (May 10) at the Advisory Council meeting held at Jamuna. Later, at 11 pm, Law Advisor Asif Nazrul elaborated on the decisions of the meeting in a briefing.

He said that at today's Advisory Council meeting, a decision has been taken to prohibit all activities of the Awami League, including cyberspace under the Anti-Terrorism Act, to protect the security and sovereignty of the country, the safety of the activists of the July movement, and the protection of the plaintiffs and witnesses of the International Crimes Tribunal until the trial of the Bangladesh Awami League and its leaders is completed in the International Crimes Tribunal.

During the briefing, the Law Advisor read out the written statement of the Advisory Council regarding the decision to ban all activities of the Awami League.

He also informed that necessary circulars regarding this will be issued on the next working day. The meeting also decided to finalize and publish the July Declaration within the next 30 working days.

Environment Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Housing and Public Works Advisor Adilur Rahman Khan, Local Government Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, and Information Advisor Mahfuz Alam were present during the press conference.
