The Cabinet Division has been officially relieved of its responsibility to observe August 15th as the National Mourning Day for the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family.
A gazette notification was issued late Thursday (August 14) by the Cabinet Division, amending the Rules of Business and abolishing the provision that assigned it this duty.
Previously, the "Allocation of Business Among the Different Ministries and Divisions" section of the Rules of Business, under the Cabinet Division's responsibilities, included Item 9A: "Observance of August 15th as National Mourning Day."
The gazette states that in exercise of the power conferred by Article 55(6) of the Constitution, the President has made a further amendment to the Rules of Business, 1996, as follows: "Schedule-I (Allocation of Business Among the Different Ministries and Divisions) of the said Rules, under the heading 'CABINET DIVISION', Item No. 9A and the corresponding entry thereto shall be omitted."
Prior to 2024, the Awami League government had observed August 15th as a national holiday and a Category 'A' national day of mourning. However, after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5th of last year, the interim government on August 13th cancelled both the observance of the day of mourning and the public holiday.
