441 Lives Lost in Road Accidents in One Month

A total of 441 people were killed in road accidents across the country during October of this year, an increase of 5.75% compared to the previous month.

This information was revealed in a report published by the Road Safety Foundation on Wednesday (November 19).

Accident Statistics for October

The report states that a total of 486 road accidents occurred in October. In addition to the 441 fatalities, 1,128 people were injured. The deceased include 57 women and 63 children.

According to the data, the average daily fatality rate from road accidents rose from 13.9 in September to 14.7 in October.

Statistics indicate that 31.6% of the total fatalities were motorcyclists. A total of 137 people were killed in 192 motorcycle accidents in October.

Dengue Claims Six More Lives; 788 New Patients Hospitalized

Furthermore, 98 pedestrians were killed in accidents during this period, accounting for 22.22% of the total deaths. Drivers and their assistants accounted for 62 deaths, which is 14.5% of the total.

Other Accidents

In addition to road accidents, October also saw:

9 Water Transport Accidents: 11 people were killed and 4 were reported missing.
46 Rail Track Accidents: 43 people were killed and 12 were injured.

Analysis of Accidents

The Road Safety Foundation’s observation and analysis show that:

166 accidents occurred on National Highways.
148 accidents took place on Regional Roads.
81 accidents happened on Rural Roads.
87 accidents were reported on City Roads.

Division-wise statistics show that Dhaka Division recorded the highest number of fatalities with 112 deaths in 121 accidents, while Sylhet Division recorded the lowest with 24 deaths in 26 accidents.

Foundation’s Recommendations

The Foundation believes that most accidents are caused by loss of vehicle control due to excessive speed. It suggests that technology-based monitoring must be increased to control speed, and drivers need motivational training.

The report also noted that reckless speeding by vehicles and the lack of awareness among pedestrians are contributing to the rise in pedestrian fatalities.

Therefore, the Road Safety Foundation has emphasized the importance of life-oriented awareness campaigns through the mass media and social media, initiated by the government.

Indian External Affairs Minister, Dr S Jaishankar is to arrive in Dhaka tomorrow to attend the funeral of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. “External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar will represent the Government and people of India at the funeral of Begum Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party,” the Indian high commission in Dhaka said in a statement this evening. Begum Zia’s Janaza would be held after Zohr prayers while the high commission statement said Jaishankar would accordingly visit Dhaka on December 31. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in the morning expressed deep sorrow at Begum Zia’s demise, recalling her contributions to Bangladesh and bilateral relations. “Our sincerest condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss,” he said. The Indian premier recalled her political legacy saying “as the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, her important contributions towards the development of Bangladesh, as well as India-Bangladesh relations, will always be remembered”. “I recall my warm meeting with her in Dhaka in 2015.
