27 Bangladeshi Citizens Killed on Borders in 11 Months: HRSS Report

A report published by the human rights organization Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) has revealed a grim picture of casualties and torture involving Bangladeshi citizens on the borders with India and Myanmar.

A total of 27 Bangladeshi citizens were killed on both borders during the 11-month period from January to November 2025.

Of these, 24 individuals were killed by bullets fired by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF). Furthermore, the BSF forcibly pushed back (push-in) at least 3,399 people into Bangladesh.

In addition, 12 Bangladeshi citizens, including an Ansar member, were injured and 1 was killed in landmine explosions planted by the Arakan Army on the Myanmar border during these 11 months.

The Arakan Army also detained 163 fishermen along with 19 trawlers from the water boundaries of the Naf River and the Bay of Bengal.

The HRSS report, titled 'Bangladesh Human Rights Situation January-November 2025,' was released on Tuesday (December 9) and compiled based on news published in 15 national newspapers and information collected by the organization.

India-Bangladesh Border Incidents

The report states that in 69 separate attack incidents along the India-Bangladesh border from January to November 2025, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) was responsible for the deaths of 24 Bangladeshi citizens by shooting, wounding 38, and arresting 60 others.

In separate incidents on the Sylhet border, two young Bangladeshi men, Shahed Ahmad (25) and Jamal Uddin (45), were killed by bullets fired by Indian Khasias, and 2 others were injured by gunfire in another event.

In the Kulaura border area of Moulvibazar, a Bangladeshi youth was hacked to death by Indian citizens.

The bodies of two young men, Nazimuddin from the Darshana border in Damurhuda Upazila, Chuadanga, and Kazi Chhobir from the banks of the Gumti River on the Cumilla border, were recovered.

The report also notes that the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) forcibly pushed back (push-in) at least 3,399 people into Bangladesh through various border areas.

Furthermore, in November, the Indian Coast Guard detained 108 fishermen from the Bay of Bengal near the Indian territorial waters.

Myanmar-Bangladesh Border Incidents

On the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, 2 people were injured by Arakan Army gunfire in the Naikhongchhari border area of Bandarban.

In January, panic was created among locals when bullets and mortar shells fired from Myanmar landed in Bangladeshi border areas.

In the 11-month period, 12 Bangladeshi citizens, including an Ansar member, were injured, and 1 person was killed in landmine explosions planted by the Arakan Army.

During this time, the Arakan Army detained 163 fishermen along with 19 trawlers from the water boundaries of the Naf River and the Bay of Bengal along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

Details of Landmine Incident

On October 11, BGB Naik Akter Hossain’s right ankle was completely blown off and his left leg was severely injured due to a mine explosion while he was on regular patrol near Border Pillar 40 in the no-man's land adjacent to the Baishphari border in Ghumdhum Union, Naikhongchhari Upazila.

He later succumbed to his injuries on Friday (October 31) at Dhaka's Combined Military Hospital (CMH) while undergoing treatment.

Additionally, a woman named Chhenuwara Begum (35) in Hnila, Teknaf, Cox's Bazar, was seriously injured by a bullet fired from Myanmar's Rakhine State.

Jaishankar to Attend Khaleda Zia’s Funeral

Indian External Affairs Minister, Dr S Jaishankar is to arrive in Dhaka tomorrow to attend the funeral of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. “External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar will represent the Government and people of India at the funeral of Begum Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party,” the Indian high commission in Dhaka said in a statement this evening. Begum Zia’s Janaza would be held after Zohr prayers while the high commission statement said Jaishankar would accordingly visit Dhaka on December 31. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in the morning expressed deep sorrow at Begum Zia’s demise, recalling her contributions to Bangladesh and bilateral relations. “Our sincerest condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss,” he said. The Indian premier recalled her political legacy saying “as the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, her important contributions towards the development of Bangladesh, as well as India-Bangladesh relations, will always be remembered”. “I recall my warm meeting with her in Dhaka in 2015.
