The town of Teknaf in Cox's Bazar district was shaken by an earthquake that originated in the Bay of Bengal just after midnight. The 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck at 3:29 AM on Thursday (November 27), with its epicenter located 118 kilometers from Teknaf.
According to the seismology website Volcano Discovery, most people did not feel the tremor as the shaking in Teknaf was very slight.
While Volcano Discovery did not report the depth of the earthquake in the Bay of Bengal, the EMSC (European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre) stated that it occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the earth.
This event follows a powerful 5.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the capital Dhaka and various other regions of the country last Friday, which was one of the most intense quakes felt in recent years.
The intensity of the shaking on that day was so high that many people fled their homes in panic and rushed into the streets. Many eyewitnesses stated that they had never experienced such a strong earthquake before.
As soon as the quake began, people quickly started descending from multi-story buildings across the city. A chaotic situation erupted in homes, offices, and commercial centers.
That earthquake, which originated in Narsingdi, resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people nationwide and left hundreds injured.
