President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to the Interim Government, have paid deep tribute to the martyred intellectuals of Bangladesh.
On the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day, the President laid a wreath at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at 7:00 AM on Sunday (December 14). The Chief Adviser followed suit, laying a wreath at 7:20 AM.
The President and the Chief Adviser stood in solemn silence for a while, paying profound respect to the memory of the martyred intellectuals.
A smartly turned-out contingent of the Bangladesh Armed Forces presented a state salute, while a bugle played the 'Last Post.'
After offering their tributes, the President and the Chief Adviser separately exchanged greetings with the members of the Advisory Council, top civil and military officials, war-wounded heroic freedom fighters, and other invited guests.
Background on Martyred Intellectuals Day
It is recalled that on December 14, 1971, the occupying Pakistani forces and their local collaborators—the Razakars, Al-Badr, and Al-Shams—murdered the best sons of Bengal: the intellectuals.
Eminent personalities, including renowned academics, physicians, engineers, journalists, artists, and teachers, were blindfolded, abducted from their homes, and taken to unknown locations where they were brutally tortured and killed.
Their bodies were later dumped in several spots across the capital, including Rayerbazar and Mirpur.
Realizing their impending defeat, the Pakistani military and their local auxiliary forces, such as Al-Badr, Al-Shams, and Razakars, coldly carried out this massacre with the aim of intellectually crippling the emerging nation of Bangladesh by eliminating its intellectual community.
Among the martyred intellectuals were Dr. Alim Chowdhury, Professor Munir Chowdhury, Professor Muniruzzaman, Dr. Fazle Rabbi, Serajuddin Hossain, Shahidullah Kaiser, Professor G.C. Dev, Jyotirmoy Guhathakurata, Professor Santosh Bhattacharya, Mofazzal Haider Chowdhury, journalist Khondaker Abu Taleb, Nizamuddin Ahmed, S.A. Mannan (Ladu Bhai), A.N.M. Golam Mostafa, Syed Nazmul Haque, and Selina Parvin, among others.
