Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has emphasized the importance of implementing more projects through domestic financing, moving away from unnecessary foreign debt. He noted that such a shift would make Bangladesh significantly more self-reliant.
The Chief Adviser made these remarks on Wednesday (December 24) during the weekly meeting of the Council of Advisers while reviewing the revised budget, which is set to take effect on February 1. Professor Yunus presided over the meeting held at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon.
Focus on Education Quality
During a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in the afternoon, the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, stated that the Chief Adviser has placed special emphasis on the education sector—specifically the improvement of educational standards.
Professor Yunus observed that while there was a focus on expanding educational institutions in the past, the quality of education declined rapidly, particularly during the previous authoritarian period. In this context, he stressed that improving the quality of education must now be given the highest priority.
Rural Development and Youth as "Resources"
The Chief Adviser also highlighted rural development, noting that farmers have produced a record amount of food crops this year. He stated that it is necessary to ensure more benefits in the budget to improve their standard of living.
Furthermore, Professor Yunus underscored the potential of the younger generation. During the meeting, he referred to Bangladesh as a "mine of youth resources" and insisted that the needs of young people must be reflected in determining budget priorities.
Women's Empowerment and Health
The Chief Adviser spoke on the necessity of increasing budget allocations for women’s empowerment. In his view, the overall development of women is directly linked to national progress.
Additionally, Professor Yunus emphasized achieving self-sufficiency by increasing local production, including industrial goods. He also highlighted the urgent need to expand the budget for the health sector.
