Khoda Baksh Chowdhury, the Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser with responsibility for the Ministry of Home Affairs, has resigned from his post.

The President has officially accepted his resignation, according to a statement released by the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing on Wednesday night.

A notification issued by the Cabinet Division confirmed the development, stating that the President accepted the resignation of Mr. Chowdhury, who had been exercising executive powers with the rank and status of a Minister of State.

Background of the Appointment

In November last year, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus appointed three individuals as Special Assistants with the status of Ministers of State to support the advisers of the Home, Health, and Education ministries.

These assistants were granted executive authority within their respective departments.

Khoda Baksh Chowdhury, a former Inspector General of Police (IGP), was assigned to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Of the other two appointees, Professor M. Aminul Islam (Education) resigned several months ago, while Professor Sayedur Rahman remains in charge of Health.

With Mr. Chowdhury’s departure, two of the three original special assistant positions have now seen resignations.

Pressure from Inqilab Mancha

The resignation comes amid mounting pressure from the "Inqilab Mancha," an organization that has been protesting to demand the arrest of those responsible for the killing of Shaheed Sharif Osman Bin Hadi.

During a rally at Shahbagh on December 20, the organization issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and Special Assistant Khoda Baksh Chowdhury to provide an update on the investigation.

The group explicitly demanded their resignations if they failed to provide a satisfactory response within the deadline.

Growing Concerns Over Law and Order

In addition to the specific protests by Inqilab Mancha, there has been widespread public discourse and concern regarding the country’s overall law and order situation.

While the exact reasons for the resignation have not been formally specified, the timing coincides with these security challenges and public demands for accountability.

Khoda Baksh Chowdhury has not yet released a personal statement regarding his departure.

Jaishankar to Attend Khaleda Zia’s Funeral

Indian External Affairs Minister, Dr S Jaishankar is to arrive in Dhaka tomorrow to attend the funeral of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. “External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar will represent the Government and people of India at the funeral of Begum Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party,” the Indian high commission in Dhaka said in a statement this evening. Begum Zia’s Janaza would be held after Zohr prayers while the high commission statement said Jaishankar would accordingly visit Dhaka on December 31. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in the morning expressed deep sorrow at Begum Zia’s demise, recalling her contributions to Bangladesh and bilateral relations. “Our sincerest condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss,” he said. The Indian premier recalled her political legacy saying “as the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, her important contributions towards the development of Bangladesh, as well as India-Bangladesh relations, will always be remembered”. “I recall my warm meeting with her in Dhaka in 2015.
