Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, has expressed deep condolences following the passing of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
In a poignant Facebook post shared at 8:13 AM on Tuesday (December 30), the Press Secretary paid tribute to the late leader, describing her as a figure of unparalleled dignity and patriotism.
"Khaleda Zia was the most dignified of all leaders—our symbol of resistance and a patriot of the highest order," Alam wrote.
He further added: "Until the very last moment of her life, she was a fearless warrior and a bright beacon of hope during our most difficult times. Through her lifelong struggle, she defined the true soul of Bangladesh.
Rest in peace, Begum Khaleda Zia. May Allah grant you the highest and most beautiful place in Jannah. May you rest in eternal peace."
A Life of Sacrifice
The former Prime Minister passed away at 6:00 AM this morning at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka after a prolonged battle with multiple health complications.
Her final years were marked by significant hardship. During the 16-year administration of the Awami League, she faced extensive political persecution and imprisonment.
Supporters and medical experts have noted that she was denied the opportunity for advanced medical treatment for a long duration, leading to the onset and worsening of heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, and kidney failure.
Final Chapters
Following the student-led mass uprising and the departure of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, Khaleda Zia was officially freed by Presidential order on August 6.
Earlier this year, she traveled to London on January 7 for specialized medical care. After spending 117 days abroad, she returned to Bangladesh on May 6.
While her health initially showed signs of improvement, the long-term physical toll of her illnesses and her advanced age left her increasingly vulnerable. She was readmitted to Evercare Hospital on November 23, where she remained for over a month until her passing today.
