In a bid to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful 13th National Parliamentary Election scheduled for February 12, the interim government has enforced strict regulations on licensed firearms.

As of the latest reports, 27,995 legal weapons have been surrendered across the country.

Data reveals that a total of 48,283 firearm licenses were issued to individuals. However, 20,288 weapons remain unrecovered.

A notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs stated that legal action will be initiated against those violating the order under relevant sections of the Arms Act, 1878.

Strict Deadlines and Enforcement
Previously, a circular issued by the Home Ministry on January 18 set January 31 as the final deadline for depositing licensed weapons at respective police stations. The ministry warned that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe would result in prosecution.

Law enforcement agencies, including all Superintendents of Police (SPs), have been directed to take stern action against violators to ensure the mandate is fully implemented.

Traceability Challenges
Reports suggest that the majority of the unrecovered firearms were licensed during the tenure of the Awami League. Many of these weapon owners have reportedly fled the country or remain in hiding within the borders.

Regarding the recovery of personal weapons looted from police stations, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam addressed the media at a press conference held at Police Headquarters on Tuesday (February 11).
