A new chapter in Bangladesh’s political history begins today. Tarique Rahman, Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is set to be sworn in as the country’s 11th Prime Minister at a grand ceremony held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament at 4:00 PM.

This inauguration follows the BNP’s decisive victory in the 13th National Parliamentary Election held on February 12, where the party-led alliance secured a landslide 212 seats.

Schedule of the Day
The transition of power is unfolding in two major stages today:

MP Swearing-in (10:00 AM): Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin is administering the oath to the newly elected Members of Parliament. To manage the large number of lawmakers, the ceremony is being conducted in three phases, with 100 MPs taking the oath in each group.

Prime Minister & Cabinet Swearing-in (4:00 PM): In a break from the tradition of holding ceremonies at Bangabhaban, the oath-taking will take place at the South Plaza of the Parliament. President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath to Tarique Rahman and his initial cabinet members.

Key Highlights of the New Administration
Historic Majority: With 209 seats for the BNP alone (and 212 for the alliance), the party returns to power for the sixth time after nearly two decades out of office.

A Shift in Leadership: For the first time in 35 years, Bangladesh will have a male Prime Minister. Since 1991, the office has been held alternately by Begum Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina.

The Opposition: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has emerged as the main opposition party with 68 seats. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman is expected to be elected as the Leader of the Opposition.

The Vision: Tarique Rahman has pledged to implement the "31-Point Program" and the "July Charter"—a set of reforms aimed at building a non-discriminatory, democratic Bangladesh and curbing autocratic executive powers.

International Presence & Security
The ceremony is serving as a major diplomatic event, with representatives from across South Asia attending:

India: Represented by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Bhutan: Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay is in attendance.

Regional Envoys: Dignitaries from Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives are also present.

Traffic Advisory: Strict security measures are in place around the Parliament area. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has limited vehicle movement on roads from Khejur Bagan Crossing to Manik Mia Avenue and from the Gono Bhaban Crossing to the Aircraft Crossing.
