Prime Minister and Leader of the House Tarique Rahman announced on Wednesday that his government is committed to publishing an accurate and comprehensive list of the nation's valiant freedom fighters.
The Prime Minister made this commitment during the question-and-answer session of the National Parliament on Wednesday afternoon, responding to a supplementary question from Kurigram-1 Member of Parliament (MP) Anwarul Islam. The parliamentary session was chaired by Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaysar Kamal.
During the session, MP Anwarul Islam raised concerns regarding the politicization of historical records, noting that successive governments have frequently added or removed names from the list of freedom fighters based on political affiliation. "Why, even 55 years after independence, is the nation still unable to access a definitive list of true freedom fighters? Does the current government have a plan to identify and publish an authentic list for the nation?" the MP asked.
In his response, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasized his party’s deep historical connection to the Liberation War. "The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is the party founded by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. He was a freedom fighter who fought on the front lines and proclaimed our independence," the Prime Minister stated. He added that the current administration views it as a sacred duty to honor those who fought for the country's sovereignty.
The Prime Minister acknowledged that previous governments failed to fulfill the responsibility of creating a neutral and accurate list immediately following independence, leading to long-standing complications.
"We are currently working with experts to ensure that a complete, accurate, and transparent list of freedom fighters is compiled and presented to the nation," the Prime Minister concluded.
