GPS Mandatory in Public Transport Starting Today

To establish discipline in the country's road transport sector, monitor vehicle movement, and improve route management, the government has made the installation and activation of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices mandatory for all public transport vehicles starting today (August 1).

Furthermore, public transport lacking a connected GPS device will not be granted new registration, fitness certificates, or certificate renewals.

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) announced this directive in a public notice on Tuesday (July 28).

According to the notice, the Road Transport and Highways Division issued a gazette notification regarding the matter on June 11 to ensure a safe road transport system.

Starting August 1, owners must present proof of GPS installation and verification that the device is active via the designated mobile application at BRTA offices during vehicle registration, fitness certification, or renewal.

Technical specifications for the GPS devices are available at local BRTA offices and on the agency's official website.

Under Section 25 of the Road Transport Act, 2018, and Rule 55 of the Road Transport Rules, 2022, the BRTA stated that vehicle registration and fitness certificate renewals will only be processed after confirming the installation of a functional GPS device.

The agency has requested the cooperation of all relevant stakeholders in implementing this directive.
