Celebrating a decade of midwifery in Bangladesh

The Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery (DGNM) of the Government of Bangladesh, the British High Commission in Bangladesh and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) organized a seminar to reflect on the progress of midwifery in the country over the past decade.

Mr. Md. Saiful Hassan Badal, the Honorable Secretary of the Medical Education and Family Welfare Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare graced the occasion as Chief Guest, while Mr. Matt Cannell, the Development Director of theBritish High Commission in Bangladesh, and Dr. Eiko Narita, Country Representative a.i. of UNFPA attended as special guests. The seminar was chaired by Ms Siddika Akter, the Director General of the DGNM and attended by over a hundred senior officials and representatives from different Government Ministries, development and implementing partners, and midwifery institutions.

By supporting 38 nursing and midwifery colleges and institutes in Bangladesh, the UK Government provided critical support to the Government of Bangladesh and UNFPA in strengthening midwifery education in the country over the past decade. With the UK’s support, UNFPA provided technical assistance to the DGNM in formulating national policies and strategies on midwifery, as well as in deploying midwives to Government health facilitiesin Bangladesh. In accordance with the National Midwifery Strategy, the UK also supported BRAC University and its partners in training midwives for the private sector.

The results disseminated at the event indicate that the UK Government’s support significantly improved women’s access to safe deliveries in Bangladesh. A total of 8,646 midwives graduated over the last decade, out of whom 2,557 were deployed to Government health facilities. As a result, midwives are now conducting 86% of the child deliveries in 407Upazila Health Complexes across Bangladesh.

In addition, out of the 1,028 midwifery graduates from BRAC University, 376 are currently working at various private health facilities across Bangladesh. Around 400 midwives have also been deployed in the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar.

“The national midwifery programme has greatly contributed to the reduction of maternal and newborn deaths, as well as caesarean section rates in Bangladesh. The three-year midwifery diploma course is currently being followed by 60 nursing colleges and 105 private midwifery institutes and I am happy were are close to realizing the Honourable Prime Minister’s commitment of deploying 3,000 midwives,” the Secretary of the Medical Education and Family Welfare Division, Md. Saiful Hassan Badal highlighted in his remarks at the event.

“Midwives are at the forefront of improving maternal and newborn health in Bangladesh. Considering the need for their services across the country, more than 20,000 midwives need to be deployed to different health facilities including district and medical college hospitals in the near future. The Government has devised a plan for creating 5,000 new midwifery posts and we hope to carry it out soon,” Ms Siddika Akter, the Director General of the DGNM, stated in her remarks.

In his remarks, Mr Matt Cannell, Development Director, the British High Commission in Bangladesh, said, “Midwives play a critical role in saving the lives of both mothers and newborns. Bangladesh’s National Midwifery Programme has successfully enabled thousands of mothers to give birth normally. I commend the Government of Bangladesh for institutionalising midwifery services on its journey towards achieving universal health coverage and Sustainable Development Goal 3. The UK is proud to be part of this programme with our partners.”

In the concluding remarks, Dr. Eiko Narita, the Country representative of UNFPA in Bangladesh, said, “The UK Government’s generous support has enabled us to train thousands of midwives over the past decadeand integrate their life-saving services into the national health system. I sincerely hope we can further strengthen this partnership over the next decade and continue to support the Government in its efforts to achieve zero preventable maternal deaths and zero unmet need for family planning in Bangladesh by 2030.”

'No open space ceremony on 31st Night'

DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq BPM-Bar, PPM has requested not to hold any event in open spaces on the occasion of thirty-first night to welcome the New Year. On Saturday, 31 December 2022 at 11:00 am, Mr. Khandker made this statement in a press briefing on law and order and traffic management on the occasion of 31st Night celebration at DMP Media Center. In the press briefing, DMP Commissioner wished New Year to the city dwellers and said that sufficient number of forces have been deployed in the capital on the occasion of 31st Night celebrations. Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT), bomb disposal unit and dog squad will be on standby. They will be deployed on an emergency basis. Checkposts will be set up in various places of the capital to ensure that no terrorist, militant or group can sabotage.

'Education main tool to build poverty-free nation'

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "The Awami League government is giving more priority to education to build the country." She said, "Even in the midst of the global economic crisis government has given importance to printing new books for students." Prime Minister said, "The new generation is being made worthy of the fourth industrial revolution and smart Bangladesh." Earlier in the morning, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the programme of free textbook distribution among students of various levels in the academic year 2023, including pre-primary, primary level and minority ethnic group students. Tomorrow, January 01, the government will celebrate national book festival. The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) earlier informed districts and Upazilas to celebrate the festival in a grand atmosphere. At the Dhaka University (DU) Central Playground Primary Book Festival will be held centrally. And secondary school book festival will be held at Murapara Government Pilot Model High School ground in Rupganj, Narayanganj. In the meantime, all the preparations for distribution of free books given by the government have been completed. New textbooks of various classes have arrived in schools

'Bangladesh's transportation system enters a new era'

Linking the launching of much awaited metro service as “new era”, Sajeeb Wazed stated “initially ten set trains with six coaches will run from Uttara to Agargaon.” With prime minister Sheikh Hasina set to inaugurate the service taking the first ride by herself, netizens on social media, mainly city dwellers surrounding the areas that fall under the coverage, hailed the move. In 2022, the country witnessed some of its biggest engineering marvels become operational including the biggest infrastructure undertaking — Padma Multipurpose Bridge, a testimony according to netizens testifies to Sheikh Hasina’s unparalleled leadership capabilities.

Bangladesh is in the Epoch of Metro rail

Nowadays, Metrorail, one of the leading transportation system in the latest inner-city communication system around the world. It was first launched in London. Bangladesh is also going to be included it to the list. On Wednesday, December 28, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will start off the country's first Metro Rail. From the very next day, mass people can take the advantage of it. For the time being People can grab the Metro Rail service from Agargaon to Uttara. Country's millions of people are eagerly awaiting for the grand opening of the Metrorail (MRT Line 6). According to the Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Smart vehicles needed for Smart Bangladesh. The world is moving fast and we cannot stay behind. From Uttara to Agargaon, the first phase of the metro rail will start on December 28, from Agargaon to Motijheel, the second phase is thought to be started by the end of 2023. By 2025, the adjunct part from Motijheel to Kamalapur railway station may be launched. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said, "By 2030, Six MRT lines will be construct in Dhaka. In 2012, Dhaka's first metro rail, known as MRT Line-6, was taken forward by the Government. 21 thousand 985 crore taka was the initial cost of the MRT Line-6 project. Later on, due to an additional part from Motijheel to Kamalapur, cost expanded to 11 thousand 496 crore 92 lakhs. At that instant, the project's total cost rose to 33 thousand 472 crores. Japan International Cooperation Agency funded 19 thousand 719 crores. And Government funded 13 thousand 753 crores. According to Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) sources, the construction work of six metrorails will be completed in three phases by 2030.
