Meet India’s top women diplomats in the UN

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution to designate June 24 as the International Day of Women in Diplomacy. “As women climb the diplomatic ranks, they are outnumbered by their male peers, including at United Nations Headquarters, where they represent only one fifth of the permanent representative,” Thilmeeza Hussain, Maldives Ambassador to the United Nations, said on Monday while introducing the resolution. The UN reaffirmed that the participation of women, on equal terms with men, at all levels of decision-making is essential to the achievement of sustainable development, peace and democracy.

“Women working in diplomacy have made critical contributions to shaping the multilateral system we have inherited today. Yet, despite the evident contributions of women to diplomacy and multilateral decision-making, they continue to be underrepresented in senior diplomatic positions,” Abdulla Shahid, president of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, who presided over the adoption of the resolution, said. “They still suffer the deep-rooted legacies of sexism, which hinder their professional advancement and obscure their contributions and achievements,” the Maldivian politician added.

As the UN marks 'International Day of Women in Diplomacy', here is a list of top Indian woman diplomats:

Sneha Dubey

Sneha Dubey, India's first secretary at the United Nations, is an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of 2012 batch. Dubey is said to have completed her schooling from Goa and went to Pune Fergusson College for higher studies. She later went to Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for MPhil in international Studies. Dubey made headlines and received immense praise on social media for her response to the-then Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan raking up the issue of Kashmir in his address to the UN General Assembly in September last year.

Ruchira Kamboj

Senior diplomat Ruchira Kamboj was on Tuesday appointed India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. She will succeed T S Tirumurti. Kamboj, a 1987-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, is currently serving as India's envoy to Bhutan - first female to do so.

Vidisha Maitra

Indian diplomat Vidisha Maitra, a 2009-batch IFS officer, helped India make a significant stride when she was elected to the UN Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ), a subsidiary organ of the General Assembly in November 2020. Her achievement came at a time when India was preparing to sit in the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member for a two-year term in January 2021. Maitra, who is said to have won the ‘best training officer’ gold medal for her performance during training, has previously served as undersecretary (policy, planning, and research) at the Ministry of External Affairs.

Poulomi Tripathi

A former counsellor in India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, Poulomi Tripathi is a 2007-batch IFS officer who was lauded by many for calling out fake news as the then Pakistan Ambassador showed a picture of a girl from Palestine to the assembly and claimed that it was from Kashmir. 'No open space ceremony on 31st Night'

DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq BPM-Bar, PPM has requested not to hold any event in open spaces on the occasion of thirty-first night to welcome the New Year. On Saturday, 31 December 2022 at 11:00 am, Mr. Khandker made this statement in a press briefing on law and order and traffic management on the occasion of 31st Night celebration at DMP Media Center. In the press briefing, DMP Commissioner wished New Year to the city dwellers and said that sufficient number of forces have been deployed in the capital on the occasion of 31st Night celebrations. Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT), bomb disposal unit and dog squad will be on standby. They will be deployed on an emergency basis. Checkposts will be set up in various places of the capital to ensure that no terrorist, militant or group can sabotage.

'Education main tool to build poverty-free nation'

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "The Awami League government is giving more priority to education to build the country." She said, "Even in the midst of the global economic crisis government has given importance to printing new books for students." Prime Minister said, "The new generation is being made worthy of the fourth industrial revolution and smart Bangladesh." Earlier in the morning, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the programme of free textbook distribution among students of various levels in the academic year 2023, including pre-primary, primary level and minority ethnic group students. Bangladesh is in the Epoch of Metro rail

From the very next day, mass people can take the advantage of it. For the time being People can grab the Metro Rail service from Agargaon to Uttara. Country's millions of people are eagerly awaiting for the grand opening of the Metrorail (MRT Line 6). According to the Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Smart vehicles needed for Smart Bangladesh. The world is moving fast and we cannot stay behind. From Uttara to Agargaon, the first phase of the metro rail will start on December 28, from Agargaon to Motijheel, the second phase is thought to be started by the end of 2023. By 2025, the adjunct part from Motijheel to Kamalapur railway station may be launched. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said, "By 2030, Six MRT lines will be construct in Dhaka. In 2012, Dhaka's first metro rail, known as MRT Line-6, was taken forward by the Government. 21 thousand 985 crore taka was the initial cost of the MRT Line-6 project. Later on, due to an additional part from Motijheel to Kamalapur, cost expanded to 11 thousand 496 crore 92 lakhs. At that instant, the project's total cost rose to 33 thousand 472 crores. Japan International Cooperation Agency funded 19 thousand 719 crores. And Government funded 13 thousand 753 crores. According to Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) sources, the construction work of six metrorails will be completed in three phases by 2030.
