India rolls out red carpet to welcome Bangladesh premier

India today (Sunday) rolled out the red carpet to welcome Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as she arrived in New Delhi on a four-day state visit at the invitation of her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

"A VVIP chartered flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the Prime Minister and her entourage members landed in the Palam Airport, New Delhi at 11:40am local time today," Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told BSS.

The Bangladesh premier was received by State Minister for Railways and Textiles of India Darshana Vikram Jardosh and Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Muhammad Imran.

After the red carpet was rolled out at the airport in honour of Sheikh Hasina, a six-member cultural team performed a welcome dance with playing musical instruments.

Earlier, the flight carrying her departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka at 10.17am today.

During the visit, Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to have bilateral talks and a one-to-one meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Hyderabad House on September 6, the second day of her India visit.

She will be formally received by her Indian counterpart while a ceremonial guard of honour will be accorded to her there.

After holding the bilateral talks, several MoUs (Memorandum of Understandings) are likely to be signed between the two neighbouring countries while a press statement will be issued later.

Sheikh Hasina later will join a luncheon hosted in her honour by the Indian premier.

She is scheduled to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat on the first day of her visit.

On September 6, Sheikh Hasina is expected to have separate courtesy calls on Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

She is scheduled to have a call on family members of former Indian president Pranab Mukherjee the same day.

Indian external affairs minister will pay a call on the Bangladesh premier today while Minister for Development of North Eastern Region of India G. Kishan Reddy and Nobel laureate Kailash Shatyarthi will make separate calls on her on September 7.

Adani Group Chairman, Gautam Adani will also pay a courtesy call on Sheikh Hasina slated for today.

On September 7, the Bangladesh premier is expected to address a meeting with top business leaders and a ceremony for awarding "Mujib Scholarship" to direct descendants of soldiers, officers of the defence forces of India, who were martyred or critically wounded during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Khwaja Gharib Nawaz Dargah Sharif, Ajmer (Ajmer Sharif Dargah) in Rajasthan before returning to Dhaka on September 8 and Nizamuddin Aulia Dargah in Delhi on her first day of India visit today.

Sheikh Hasina is visiting India after three years since she last visited in 2019 before the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic.

The Prime Minister leads a high-level delegation which includes several ministers, advisers, state ministers, secretaries and senior officials.

The visit is seen as significant amid the Ukraine crisis, global economic downturn and ongoing Covid-19 pandemic as the two South Asian neighbours seek enhanced cooperation to overcome the challenges.

Issues related to security cooperation, investment, enhanced trade relations, power and energy sector cooperation, water sharing of common rivers, water resources management, border management, combating drug smuggling and human trafficking will get priority during the talks between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi at the Hyderabad House.

'No open space ceremony on 31st Night'

DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq BPM-Bar, PPM has requested not to hold any event in open spaces on the occasion of thirty-first night to welcome the New Year. On Saturday, 31 December 2022 at 11:00 am, Mr. Khandker made this statement in a press briefing on law and order and traffic management on the occasion of 31st Night celebration at DMP Media Center. In the press briefing, DMP Commissioner wished New Year to the city dwellers and said that sufficient number of forces have been deployed in the capital on the occasion of 31st Night celebrations. Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT), bomb disposal unit and dog squad will be on standby. They will be deployed on an emergency basis. Checkposts will be set up in various places of the capital to ensure that no terrorist, militant or group can sabotage.

'Education main tool to build poverty-free nation'

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "The Awami League government is giving more priority to education to build the country." She said, "Even in the midst of the global economic crisis government has given importance to printing new books for students." Prime Minister said, "The new generation is being made worthy of the fourth industrial revolution and smart Bangladesh." Earlier in the morning, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the programme of free textbook distribution among students of various levels in the academic year 2023, including pre-primary, primary level and minority ethnic group students. Tomorrow, January 01, the government will celebrate national book festival. The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) earlier informed districts and Upazilas to celebrate the festival in a grand atmosphere. At the Dhaka University (DU) Central Playground Primary Book Festival will be held centrally. And secondary school book festival will be held at Murapara Government Pilot Model High School ground in Rupganj, Narayanganj. Nowadays, Metrorail, one of the leading transportation system in the latest inner-city communication system around the world. It was first launched in London. From the very next day, mass people can take the advantage of it. For the time being People can grab the Metro Rail service from Agargaon to Uttara. Country's millions of people are eagerly awaiting for the grand opening of the Metrorail (MRT Line 6). According to the Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Smart vehicles needed for Smart Bangladesh. The world is moving fast and we cannot stay behind. From Uttara to Agargaon, the first phase of the metro rail will start on December 28, from Agargaon to Motijheel, the second phase is thought to be started by the end of 2023. By 2025, the adjunct part from Motijheel to Kamalapur railway station may be launched. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said, "By 2030, Six MRT lines will be construct in Dhaka. In 2012, Dhaka's first metro rail, known as MRT Line-6, was taken forward by the Government. 21 thousand 985 crore taka was the initial cost of the MRT Line-6 project. Later on, due to an additional part from Motijheel to Kamalapur, cost expanded to 11 thousand 496 crore 92 lakhs. At that instant, the project's total cost rose to 33 thousand 472 crores. Japan International Cooperation Agency funded 19 thousand 719 crores. And Government funded 13 thousand 753 crores. According to Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) sources, the construction work of six metrorails will be completed in three phases by 2030.
