PM seeks UN’s intensified role in Rohingya repatriation to Myanmar

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today reiterated her call to the international community and the United Nations (UN) to play intensified role in solving the Rohingya crisis by repatriating the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals to their motherland.

The premier made this call while UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi paid a courtesy call on her at the bilateral meeting room of Lotte New York Palace hotel.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen briefed the newsmen about the activities of the Prime Minister on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

In the meeting with Grandi, Sheikh Hasina also emphasized enhancing UNHCR's activities in Myanmar on Rohingya issues.

In reply, Grandi said that he would visit Myanmar soon.

The Prime Minister restated that the Rohingya crisis can only be resolved through repatriating the forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their motherland Myanmar.

The UNHCR High Commissioner also agreed with her on this matter.

During the meeting, they discussed in details the present activities of UNHCR to help the Rohingyas who took shelter in Cox's Bazar and Bhashanchar in Bangladesh.

Later, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Karim A A Khan QC also called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the same venue in New York.

They discussed various aspects of cooperation between Bangladesh and the ICC.

The Premier has assured the ICC Prosecutor that Bangladesh will continue cooperation with all ongoing efforts at the ICC to ensure justice and accountability for the Rohingya victims in Myanmar.

Khan in the meeting expressed his interest to visit Bangladesh early next year.

Meanwhile, Executive Director of the UN Habitat Maimunah Mohd Sharif also paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In the meeting at bilateral meeting room of the Lotte New York Palace hotel in New York, they discussed Bangladesh government’s steps considering the importance of sustainable urbanization and the areas of future cooperation.

In this connection, the Prime Minister informed him about the success of the Ashrayan Project undertaken by her government for the landless and homeless people of Bangladesh.

Replying to a query regarding the recent incident of landing shell at Bangladesh-Myanmar border, the Bangladesh Foreign Minister said the incident of falling shell by Myanmar inside Bangladesh border is an “unintentional mistake”.

The Myanmar authority informed that they are not shelling inside Bangladesh targeting it, he added.

“That particular border area is very much crisscrossed. Sometimes it is difficult to understand the border --- they are not shelling inside our border intentionally, one and two shells that landed inside our border, it happened by mistake,” he added.

Momen also said that Bangladesh Foreign Ministry summoned Myanmar Ambassador and the Myanmar authority promised that they will maintain cautiousness.

Responding to another question, the Foreign Minister said that the US government did not give any specific information regarding sanction on some former and present RAB officials.

He said the government wanted to know the reason of imposing sanction.

“Still, they did not give any specific information. So we do not know.....,” he said.

'No open space ceremony on 31st Night'

DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq BPM-Bar, PPM has requested not to hold any event in open spaces on the occasion of thirty-first night to welcome the New Year. On Saturday, 31 December 2022 at 11:00 am, Mr. Khandker made this statement in a press briefing on law and order and traffic management on the occasion of 31st Night celebration at DMP Media Center. In the press briefing, DMP Commissioner wished New Year to the city dwellers and said that sufficient number of forces have been deployed in the capital on the occasion of 31st Night celebrations. Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT), bomb disposal unit and dog squad will be on standby. They will be deployed on an emergency basis. Checkposts will be set up in various places of the capital to ensure that no terrorist, militant or group can sabotage.

'Education main tool to build poverty-free nation'

The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) earlier informed districts and Upazilas to celebrate the festival in a grand atmosphere. Bangladesh is in the Epoch of Metro rail

Nowadays, Metrorail, one of the leading transportation system in the latest inner-city communication system around the world. It was first launched in London. Bangladesh is also going to be included it to the list. On Wednesday, December 28, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will start off the country's first Metro Rail. From the very next day, mass people can take the advantage of it. For the time being People can grab the Metro Rail service from Agargaon to Uttara. Country's millions of people are eagerly awaiting for the grand opening of the Metrorail (MRT Line 6). According to the Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Smart vehicles needed for Smart Bangladesh. The world is moving fast and we cannot stay behind. From Uttara to Agargaon, the first phase of the metro rail will start on December 28, from Agargaon to Motijheel, the second phase is thought to be started by the end of 2023. By 2025, the adjunct part from Motijheel to Kamalapur railway station may be launched. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said, "By 2030, Six MRT lines will be construct in Dhaka. In 2012, Dhaka's first metro rail, known as MRT Line-6, was taken forward by the Government. 21 thousand 985 crore taka was the initial cost of the MRT Line-6 project. Later on, due to an additional part from Motijheel to Kamalapur, cost expanded to 11 thousand 496 crore 92 lakhs. At that instant, the project's total cost rose to 33 thousand 472 crores. Japan International Cooperation Agency funded 19 thousand 719 crores. And Government funded 13 thousand 753 crores. According to Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) sources, the construction work of six metrorails will be completed in three phases by 2030.
